Scamming the Scammers!

If you’re like me you’ve had the “Microsoft Technical Call” or “There is a problem with your computer call” at home.  It used to really annoy me, it’s a scam – a complete scam, so if you don’t know already you do not sign up to anything or give them access to anything.  But recently I’ve decided I am going to play these people at their own game.  So the kids and I play a game when they call.  We have 5 different scenarios and they choose who I play:

1 The shouter – I listen to the call, do all the things they say, wait until they transfer me to the “supervisor”, listen to him and then shout very loudly down the phone at him, I shout – “Do not call here again.  I repeat, do not call here again” – works like a charm!  All you hear is a stunned silence on the other end of the phone! While he tries to recover and then after a few seconds the hang-up!

2 The accent – put on an accent, doesn’t matter how bad it is.  I usually get the kids to choose which accent they want me to try! – Last time I tried an Aussie accent but I really can only say “Yeah mate” with an Aussie accent, so that made for a fun conversation with the guy!  He did really well trying to keep his composure but eventually got frustrated and hung up!

3 “Pardon, can you say that again” – pretty self-explanatory, get them to repeat everything and see how long the conversation goes!

4 The repeater – repeat everything they say word for word, again pretty self-explanatory, see how long you can keep it up for and how long they stay on the call!

5 The get everything wrong person – When you’re on the call, they will get you to look at thing on your computer, you just do the wrong thing and listen to them get frustrated!

So instead of getting frustrated on the phone and annoyed that they called you, you actually hang up laughing and if you’ve got kids, they are in stitches laughing!  My daughter videoed me yesterday and is going to show her friends – I am a star!

My wife has actually started doing it too!  She says that we don’t have a computer and it must be our neighbours and should she go and get them!

If you are game to give it a go – send me an email with how it went and if you have any other techniques, we may even put it in next month’s newsletter!

We’ve been scammed enough – it’s time to get them back!

Until next month.
