Data theft serves as a timely reminder to be vigilant

Sydney-based event management company Pont3 detected unauthorised access to its third-party external electronic mailing account earlier this month.

The company reported that a legitimate user account was used to take information, including participant, volunteer and associate details – names, phone numbers, and email and mailing address information. However, financial details were not affected.

Pont3 manages mailing lists for events including the Sydney Harbour 5k and 10k runs, Sydney Running Festival, Warrior Run, Electric Run and the Manly Inflatable Boat Race. These lists have been compromised, as has the Pont3 newsletter list.

Should anyone receive a phone call, email or SMS from a person claiming to be associated with Pont3, they should not, under any circumstances, provide any other personal or financial information.

The breach is currently under investigation, with the Pont3 internal team working with external security specialists and the NSW Police.

This breach serves as a timely reminder for everyone to be vigilant when it comes to checking the legitimacy of all emails they receive. In addition, the identity of door-to-door or telephone callers should also be scrutinised.

If you are ever uncertain about an email’s legitimacy, do not reply and do not click any links within the body of the email. Instead, contact the organisation directly or check other legitimate sources, such as their website.
